Al Sherman off for another Hatz ride. The AHA West Coast Annual Cottage Grove Fly-In was held on Labor Day weekend under clear skies. It was a low key event this year. The main events included visiting with other Hatz Nutz, discussing the current state of the Hatz art, a bit of flying and some careful inspection of the heavily laden blackberry brambles.
Ron Bartley taxis in with a watchful eye on the blackberry brambles. There were 3 Hatz in attendance, with a few others as reluctant misses. Al Sherman had to taxi to the event, but two others flew in. Jerry and Barb Norcia came all the way from Cresswell, while Ron Bartley flew up from Ashland with his airplane. Jean & Don Berry flew up in their Bonanza promising to have their plane there next year. Annie and I flew up from San Francisco in a rented spam can with our dear friends Rachel O'Gorman and Jeff Wisdom. Another big highlight of the event was seeing all the progress on the Hughes Racer. This remarkable recreation of Howard Hughes HR-1B Racer is making great progress towards completion. There are a couple of pictures below, with more information available on the Wright Tools web site. Lunch on Saturday was at a local restaurant, with about 12 people attending. The food was great, and a whole lot less work and fuss than having an on field buffet. After lunch, Al took Rachel and Jeff for their first ever rides in a Hatz.
How'z this for a couple of the now famous patented "Hatz Grins" from Rachel and Jeff? While not quite ready to start on their own Hatz (Rachel wants a Bonanza), they both had a great time, and are now pushing me to make faster progress on #680. After their rides and a bit more Hatzing the 4 of us pushed on to visit Jeff's sister in Portland. A Special Hatz Thanks to Al and Carole Sherman for hosting this wonderful get together.

![]() Jerry and Barb Norcia were off checking their answering machine while the group photo was taken. Here they are with their Ernest English Hatz that is now for sale. Dan Moudree was also there but successfully dodged my camera. |
