The number
of Hatz Biplanes that win awards around the world is amazing.
Perhaps it's just that there's such a high standard of excellence
in the history of the construction of these aircraft. Or maybe
the Hatz just makes you want to make it perfect. Whatever the
reason, the list continues to grow.
This page
is not finished by a long shot. There are pictures of champions
that have been and that have yet to be that will eventually find
their way here. These are the aircraft that inspire us and give
us a standard against which to judge our own efforts. As the
beer commercial philosophers say "It don't get no better
than this!"
The most recent addition is actually a few years old.
For some reason, Denny Parson's efforts had been neglected here. Scroll on down to 1997 to see his handywork.

While flying from Denver to the

Built by Ray and Dorothy Hill,
the Hills are very proud of Jeff's win.

Dale Sever's
"New Vintage"
1998 Bronze Lindy Oshkosh Champion Plan's Built
1999 Sun'n'Fun Grand Champion
1999 EAA North Central Regional Grand Champion
The absolute crowd pleaser at
Oshkosh AirVenture 98 was Dale's gorgeous CB-1. Invited by EAA
to participate in a Showcase Fly-by, interviewed by Sport Aviation,
and photographed in the air by request of EAA, Dale's busy Oshkosh
was topped off with a bronze Lindy. He's going to need a bigger
trophy case at home though, since winning Grand Champion at Sun'n'Fun
and at the North Central Regional.

Rick Hansen's
"Tizzy Too"
1998 Bronze Lindy Oshkosh Champion Plan's Built
As lightning strikes twice, Rick
Hansen returns to Oshkosh with his second Hatz, N208RH. Called
"Tizzy Too", Rick built from the same plans set used
to make the 1986 Grand Champion "Tizzy Lish" (see below)!

Billy
Dawson's 1997 Oshkosh Grand Champion Hatz "Classic"
- Too many awards to list -
At Oshkosh, '96, Billy was kind
enough to let me try his Hatz on for size. I sat in his aircraft
for over an hour and all he did was encourage me to stay as long
as I liked. If I had, I would still be there today. In 1997,
Billy's gorgeous Hatz won Grand Champion at the EAA Convention
in Oshkosh.Something that Hatz's do from time to time!

Sun n Fun Grand Champion Plans Built - 1997
Long overdue is Denny Parsons's award winning Hatz #492
This airplane is now owned by Bill Willcutts. This photo was taken as Bill was leaving Florida on his way home to Colorado. There's also a picture of the plane on the picture gallery on page one, near the end. Interestingly that's Bill in the cockpit at Sun & Fun in "97," who would have thought that he'd own it five years later.

1986 -

The cover of
the 1986 Sport Aviation showing Rick Hansen's Oshkosh Grand Champion,
"Tizzy Lish".
It was Rick's beautiful aircraft,
the Tizzy Lish, that first got me wanting to build on of these
wonderful airplanes. The aircraft is now being restored on the
East Coast and should be flying soon.
Rick is just down the road a ways and has always been more than
helpful to me on my project.

The "Tizzy
Lish" 1986 Oshkosh Grand Champion.
It was the Tizzy Lish that ignited
interest in the Hatz within a lot of builders, including, he
tells me, Billy Dawson. A tradition of Grand Champions goes on!
