40 YEARS OF HATZ BIPLANES

Please mark your calendar and start making plans now to attend the 10th Annual Hatz Biplane Fly-in at Brodhead, WI. This event will be JULY 25, 26 and 27 which is the week-end before EAA AIRVENTURE at Oshkosh. 2008 will mark 40 years since a true grassroots builder and aviator JOHN HATZ made his dream of designing, building and flying his own biplane come true. Some how he captured the nostalgia of an old biplane with antique looking lines lifting off a grass runway and turned it into a simple design that is timeless and enjoyed by many builders and flyers all over the world to this day. Our goal this year will be to attract as many Hatz Biplanes as possible and make it the largest gathering ever of the Hatz cb-1, Hatz Classic, Hatz Bantam,Hatz Custom, and Mehlin’s Warner Hatz. We believe there are many Hatz Biplane owners out there that didn’t build their Hatz and may not know about the Hatz Biplane Association. So, let the count-down to Brodhead begin. If you are a Hatz builder, flyer, own a set of plans or just want to ride in a Hatz then be sure to attend this wonderful event. Please let us know if you are planning to fly-in in your Hatz as we would like to have 40 Hatz Biplanes this year. Happy Hatzing to everyone and I will keep you updated on the up-coming fly-in.

"Forty for the Fortieth" and "H2O" Planned for 2008

2008 marks the 40th anniversary of the first flight of the first Hatz biplane, built and flown by the late John Hatz, Gleason, Wisconsin. We have been having anniversary celebrations each five years, and hope to make the 40th as big and exciting as possible. During the discussions in Brodhead (summer, 2007), it was suggested that we shoot for a gathering of 40 Hatzes at Brodhead for the 2008 Midwest Regional, July 24-27. As usual, Friday and Saturday are likely to be the biggest days and, as usual, EAA will start the following Monday, July 28. With that in mind, the group also came up with "H2O", meaning "Hatzes to Oshkosh!" There were only two on the field this year at OSH, Jeff Moore's Black and Yellow LB-1, Mail Wing, and Mark and Sandra's yellow Hatz Bantam prototype. They did a great job of representing Hatzdom, of couse, but we we're planning on a much larger contingent: maybe even forty; for next year. Miracles happen, so who knows, there may even be a brand new red and black Classic there named Rocinante! (Chuck's 'it will be finished on Tuesday' Hatz) We're hoping to be able to set up a mass fly-in to OSH, possibly on Sunday out of Brodhead, with all of us arriving at OSH en masse. It gives me goose bumps just thinking of it!

So, all you Hatz owners mark your calenders for the Midwest Regional and, if at all possible for Oshkosh 2008. Let's celebrate John Hatz's beautiful biplane in style. Let's get 40 Hatzes and at least one hundred Hatzers at Brodhead and OSH next year!
